Tantric Fairy GodMother's Blog AUGUST 2010
A few weeks ago I led a women's workshop, the primary aim of which was to make space for those feelings that we simply don't have time to connect to in this fast paced world, and the needs that this society so often neglects to address. I weaved visualisation, breath, touch, movement and contact dance into the workshop, all elements that one could expect to encounter in a tantric session, and the final exercise was explicitly tantric, inspired by the 'Firebreath Orgasm' from Barbara Carrellas's 'Urban Tantra'. I used the techniques involved as a direct path into the body and the emotions stored there, and as an ideal channel for their expression.
It is TANTRA as a way of making space that I wish to talk about in this article.
Tantra, or neo-tantra as we might more accurately term the techniques I used in the workshop and those used at the London Tantric Temple, makes use of the simple gifts given to us by our very humanity, gifts that we nevertheless forget, neglect, or indeed reject in our fast paced world; breath, movement, conciousness, and touch.
Because of the sheer speed at which we seek to move in this day and age, because of the length of our to-do lists (and I speak as someone who could make lists for Britain), and the number of responsibilities involved in living as isolated units in an ocean of other equally isolated units, the very essence of being alive, breath itself, has become a luxury.
When was the last time you took ten minutes out of your day just to breath? Can you even remember when you last breathed deeply? And yet notice the difference in how you breath when you are stressed or frustrated, and when you are relaxed or happy; indeed, notice the difference in how you feel when you're angry, and how you feel after ten minutes of breathing deeply despite your anger. The same applies to movement; when was the last time you moved in a direction you wanted to go in, rather than one dictated by necessity, work, responsibility?
Would you dare to dance in the street? And if not, why? Because it might look silly, too childish, too liberal? Our body is made for movement and expression, houses all our emotions, all those feelings that need to be allowed so that we can move forward as people, and yet moving it has now become a cause for embarassment... But feelings just want to be felt, and instead the body is left to struggle under the burden of pent up emotions and externally imposed movement.
As to consciousness, simply being present in the moment, and focused on nothing but that which exists right now, namely, right now, the present moment... between feeling bad about the past and worrying about the future, we never think to make time for the precious moments that we're missing here and now. Finally, we come to touch. Every single one of us, no exceptions, has the natural and innate ability to offer comfort, healing, and pleasure with our touch, our warmth, our body, and every single one of us is born with the instincts to derive comfort and strength from the same. But instead of offering this gift to one another, we are taught to be afraid of touch, we shy away from one another and talk with great enthusiasm about our boundaries, often without balancing them with our other, more tactile needs.
And so, when it came to addressing women's feelings and making space for their needs, it seemed natural to turn to tantra for guidance. Tantra, unlike many of the spiritual paths that originated from the same roots it stems from in the East, has always sought to embrace and accept to the whole being, to work with rather than against and dance through rather than around; in short, tantra makes space for the whole person, inviting us to come to it exactly as we are, and work from how we are feeling at the time.
The women who came to the workshop were from diverse walks of life, yet all wearing similar labels: mother, partner, giver, strong, reliable, teacher, healer... Labels like this will always obscure our more sensitive, more vulnerable, more emotional selves, those selves we are afraid to reveal and allow for fear of our labels being taken away.
But these are exactly the selves tantra is interested in, the hidden corners it will seek out, filling them with breath, expressing them through movement, allowing consciousness to shed light on them, soothing them with touch, and it was tantra that made space equally for their tears and their empowerment, for their introspection and their healing, for their pain and their pleasure.
Breath, movement, consciousness, touch; how much more lacking are these elements on the streets of the modern day metropolis. And it is here that the Tantric Temple has sought to make space, inviting clients of any gender and sexual orientation to come as they are and be nothing more or less than themselves. Be asked to breath, invited to move, come into the present, and surrender to a touch that is as compassionate as it is tender... There is space here, for you.
